For Lightly coloured wallpapers it is recommended to have a uniform white or light neutral colour wall.

All plaster surfaces should be sealed with the recommended wall sealer for Wallpaper This may be Zinsser Shieldz or a good quality Wallpaper "Size".

Any shiny surfaces such as glass or laminate appropriately treated please ask our staff for directions as per your individual circumstances.

There are 3 Major differing types of Wallpapers

  • Non-Woven Paste The Wall
  • Pre-pasted Wet & Hang
  • Un-pasted Paste the Paper

With all Wallpapers you should always Check your rolls to ensure you have the right wallpaper and the batch or lot numbers are the same.

Rolls should be opened and checked for faults before installation, and if you suspect there may be a fault please contact us immediately.

The very first thing is to map out how the wallpaper is going to be hung on the walls e.g  whether to start from a corner or the middle of a wall - this will depend on your pattern and wall requirements.

If starting from a corner measure 50cm Or (2-3cm less than the width of your wallpaper) from a corner and mark a vertical straight line using a Plumb bob, Laser Level or spirit on the wall to line up your first sheet of paper - this will ensure your wallpaper is straight.

Non-Woven - Paste The Wall Wallpaper

Non-woven wallcoverings are easy to hang and easy to remove environmentally friendly wallcoverings:

  • They are the leading edge technical development in wallcoverings in recent years.
  • Made of mineral and cellulose fibre.
  • Usually containing no vinyl so they are environmentally friendly & Have Low VOC.
  • Often sizing and booking is not required however we still recommend sizing walls as this will make it easier to apply and removal even easier.
  • It is easier to strip, coming off in one sheet.
  • With dimensional stability non-woven wallpapers have a high wet-strength and thus maintain their measurements when wet – less stretching and are less Likley to form bubbles whilst drying.

Quick: Paste the wall is an easy way to hang wallpaper when the manufacturer suggests this method. You won’t believe how quickly you can change a room by wallpapering.  Use a roller to evenly paste where the first length of wallpaper will hang and don't forget to use a paint brush to get the paste right into the corners of your wall.  Make sure you use plenty of paste and that the pasted area is slightly wider than the width of the roll.

Clean: No fuss, no mess. Just pick up a roll and go. Slide the paper into position with one edge against your vertical line on the wall. The other edge will wrap around the corner by 2-3cm. Smooth it down with a smoother or lay brush and if doing a single standalone wall cut excess off into the corner.  If continuing around the wall push wallpaper firmly into corner and using a border overlap adhesive overlap the edge of the wallpaper join. If you are unclear about this process please call us for more detailed instructions.

Easy: Trim the top and bottom using a sharp utility / snap blade knife & trim guide. Then repeat all 3 steps for each strip making sure the pattern matches and the edges are tight together – it really is that easy.

Pre-Pasted Wallpaper

Follow the same directions for wall preparation as above.

It is extremely important you read your manufacturers instructions before you start hanging your wallpaper - instructions will be on each roll of wallpaper .  As each manufacturer may use different materials times for soaking / booking may vary.

You will need a water trough or bath for most pre-pasted wallpapers.

Please use water at room temperature or tepid water. If your water is too hot it may melt the glue off the wallpaper hence causing poor adhesion to your wall or surface.

Activate the paste and prepare the paper

Loosely roll out the first panel, with the adhesive side facing out, and immerse it in your trough of water. Once the paper is wet on all sides, you will need to perform a process called “booking.” This is where you fold the top & Bottom towards the middle of the wallpaper with the Pasted sides together.

This allows the wallpaper to "rest" and ensures the paper will be flat and easier to apply to the wall and ensure the paste is properly activated.  Allow the paper to rest for approximately five minutes in this position (please note weather conditions as if it is too hot the water on the wallpaper may start to dry, therefore either less time and more water or paste may be required).

Apply the panel to the wall

After the paste has been activated and the panel has been booked, bring the paper to your starting point on the wall. Starting at the ceiling, slowly apply the top half of the panel, allowing an inch of overlap at the top of the wall.

Use a Wallpaper smoother or lay brush to smooth out the Wallpaper from the centre of to the edges of your panel, or utilise a soft brush to move any pockets of air to the outside edges. (Do not use a seam roller yet!)

When the top half has been applied and smoothed, repeat the process with the bottom half. You should have at least one inch of overlap at the bottom of your panel.

IF you need to re position please lift the section and then slide into position if you have smoothed it onto the wall and then push the wallpaper you can over stretch it which can cause joins to become visible and the pattern to not match correctly.

Make sure you remove all bubbles at this point and do not attempt to remedy any future air bubble as these secondary bubbles are more than likely drying bubbles and should disappear in 2-5 days.

Trim away excess

Using your sharp knife, trim the excess paper from the top and bottom of the panel you have just applied.

When this trimming is completed, you may find it necessary to clean your ceiling, baseboards, moulding, or chair rail with a damp sponge.

Any excess paste on these surfaces should be easily wiped away.

Repeat the process

Repeat steps 3-6 with the rest of your wallpaper. Remember to book each strip prior to hanging!

Match the seams of each subsequent panel without overlapping—you should not experience any significant shrinkage from strip to strip.

If you are papering around doors or windows, you should also remember to allow excess amounts of at least one inch on each end to ensure there are no gaps between the paper and moulding.

If you are papering in a corner, you may find it necessary to overlap panels slightly, just to ensure that no peeling occurs.

Finish up!

Once you are finished, you may gently use a seam roller to flatten any visible seams between panels. A damp sponge can be used to wipe away any excess paste on the surface of the paper or on your walls, moulding, etc.

Allow the wallpaper to settle for at least two weeks prior to hanging any pictures, applying wall decals, or making any additional modifications.

Please keep in mind that there are different types of pre pasted wallpapers some may not require resting time so it is important you read your instructions thoroughly.

After the paste has been applied and allowed to rest and the panel has been booked, bring the paper to your starting point on the wall.

Starting at the ceiling, slowly apply the top half of the panel, allowing an inch of overlap at the top of the wall.
